As we all know how fast technology is changing around us, be it in any sector or region. With the growing population, there arises a need for more infrastructure and facilities. Urbanization has gained rapid speed in terms of development that is leading us to build smart cities as well. So, from now on, it is becoming compulsory for various countries to adopt a methodology called Building Information Modeling. BIM Services have helped a lot in the construction industry to grow and improve in all aspects. BIM Consulting Services is getting momentum at a higher rate than ever before.
Since its introduction in the construction industry, BIM Services are being adopted in developed and developing countries as well. It has helped those countries to overcome the problems like space management, sustainable development, lack of infrastructure, etc. Here, by infrastructure, it is implied that it consists of public projects. More public projects have been developed in recent years because of the smooth transition of the latest technologies and software’s for every project. This sets an example for those countries that have not adopted this boon called Building Information Modeling Services. Today in this blog, we would discuss the list of countries where BIM is mandatory for public projects.
United Kingdom's construction industry is considered as one of the most advanced in the world due to its latest technology and digitized services. It has introduced and adopted the BIM Strategy which has enhanced the image of the architects, designers, contractors, and BIM Service Provider. For many years, the use of BIM Services was compulsory, especially for public projects. In April 2016, UK made BIM Level 2 compulsory on all public projects. It has gained an increase of more than 12% since 2017 and it is increasing gradually as time is passing.
When it comes to using of most advanced technologies, United States is the pioneer of BIM Services and BIM Implementation. The US is considered the current leader of BIM Methodology. BIM is not mandatory across all the states but it is compulsory for public projects wherever the BIM Services are used. A state like Wisconsin has made BIM Services mandatory for public projects with a budget of $5 million. The implementation of BIM is being done at a slow pace due to more experimental forms. But the improvements can be seen slowly and gradually as the digitalization process is carried out at a faster pace.
France has already started implementing BIM Services by setting the industry standards for the same. They started this process by building 5,00,000 houses using BIM in 2014. In near future, the use of BIM for public projects will be mandatory and they have allocated a fund of Euros 20 million to make the construction industry fully digital. This will help them in cost reduction, and it will eventually lead to sustainable development. France made it compulsory to use BIM along with its Level Of Development like LOD100 to LOD500 and stages like 3D BIM to 7D BIM. By implementing this, their aim is to improve the quality of data reducing the overall costs of the project.
It was in the year 2002 that Finland started implementing BIM technology. Finland stands out in this list due to its usage of BIM Services in almost every project. From the year 2007, 93% of architectural firms and 60% of engineering firms have started implementing BIM in every construction project they have worked on.
Sweden has made the implementation of BIM Services compulsory from the year 2015. The quality of BIM Methodology is higher than in most countries in the world. The main reason behind it is the uniformity that is followed across all the levels in BIM companies and practices. This doesn't come as a surprise because they are following the BIM guidelines and practices since 1991. Thanks to BIM Sweden Alliance who brought the public and private players together in 2014. This led to tremendous growth in the construction industry.
Denmark has seen notable results from the year 2000, after starting the implementation of BIM Engineering Services. Slowly and gradually, many companies and construction professionals started adopted BIM Services for every project. More than 50% of construction companies adopted BIM Methodology in 2006. By seeing this, soon BIM was included in the syllabus by various educational institutions to educate their students about BIM. Denmark made it compulsory to use BIM services for public projects from 2007. Defense Construction Services and Palace and Properties Agency are state clients of Denmark and also prime examples for the country. As more private companies have started doing Research & Development on BIM Services, soon, Denmark will make BIM Compulsory for every public project.
In Norway, the construction work is different than the other countries because of some major players in the construction industry. There are mainly two associations that are solely responsible for the construction and management. They have made BIM compulsory for all public projects since 2009. Also, they require IFC-compliant BIM Models which are also mandatory for every BIM project. All these activities are carried out without any fail from the year 2010. Various organizations like SINTEF, whose headquarter is in Norway, are conducting R&D on BIM to improve the construction operations of the infrastructure by keeping sustainable development in mind.
Singapore has started implementing BIM in every public project since 2015. The government of Singapore has allocated a fund of $250 million for implementing BIM successfully. The focus of Singapore is to improve digitalization in the AEC industry. CORNET, a construction authority in Singapore, was the first to start using BIM e-submission in every construction project in 2015. They have mandated BIM for every project which is greater than 5000 sq. mts. This has resulted in more productivity of the construction on the whole.
This is one such country that has shown tremendous growth in terms of urbanization in recent years. It is because of its rapidly growing economy and support for the construction industry. Many buildings had already used BIM in high-rise buildings even before the compulsion of BIM in the country. It was in the year 2014 that the government mandated the usage of BIM Services for every construction project. Any building that is above 40 stories or any project that is larger than 30,000 sq. ft.
From the year 2016, there has been an impeccable growth of BIM Services in China. High-quality BIM services are being used by AEC professionals and various construction companies. Since the last few years, the government of China has started showing interest in all types of BIM Services and their adoption policies in the country. They have not made it compulsory yet, but are planning to do the same as soon as possible.
By reading all that is said above, it is clear that how important BIM Services are for the construction industry. They are slowly shaping the future of the construction industry and the countries where they are being implemented. The countries mentioned above are some of the leading countries of the world, whose economy is greater than many countries. If they have started using BIM, then other countries must think about BIM services and their implementations in order to bring sustainable development and build smart cities as well.
